Highlight

  • Zomato announced on Sunday that it would be removing all AI-generated food images from its listings.
  • This Decision comes after a complaint from the customer regards the misleading nature of images.

Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal announced on Sunday that the food delivery platform would be removing all AI-generated food images from its listings. The decision comes in response to a wave of customer complaints regarding the misleading nature of these images.

Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal

Goyal acknowledged on X (formerly Twitter) “At Zomato, we use various forms of AI, to make our workflows efficient. However, one place where we strongly discourage the use of AI is images for dishes in restaurant menus. AI-generated food/dish images are misleading, and we have received numerous customer complaints on this issue. Customers say that this leads to breach of trust, and it leads to higher complaints & refunds, and also, lower ratings.”

Zomato to Shift Towards Authenticity

Zomato will actively remove AI-generated food images by the end of August and will reject any future submissions. The platform is encouraging both restaurants and its internal marketing team to discontinue the use of AI-generated food images for promotional purposes.

Photography Service for Restaurants

Zomato’s CEO also urged the partner restaurants to utilize Zomato’s free real food photography service. To support restaurants in creating authentic visuals, Zomato is offering a free real-food photography service. The company emphasizes that this service is provided at cost and does not generate profit.

Conclusion

Zomato’s decision highlights the growing concerns about the ethical implications of AI-generated content, particularly in areas where authenticity is paramount. Zomato’s move to prioritize customer trust is a significant step in addressing this issue.

It’s noteworthy that this announcement comes on the heels of Zomato’s impressive Q1 FY25 financial results, showcasing a 74% year-on-year revenue growth and a 126% surge in net profit.
