Budget Session 2024 Commenced Today: Here are the Important Things You Need to Know

The Budget session of Parliament commencing on Monday with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to present the Budget on Tuesday for the Fiscal years 2024-25 at 11 am. It is to be noted that the Finance Minister already presented the interim budget for 2024-25 before the election, and this will be Nirmala Sitharaman’s seventh budget that she has presented since she became the Minister under Prime Minister Modi.

Economic Survey 2023-24

The Union Government is set to present the Economic Survey 2023-24 in both houses of the parliament today in Lok Sabha at 1 pm and in Rajya Sabha at 2 pm, followed by a press conference by Chief Economic Adviser Anantha Nageswaran. The Economic survey is a report card on the economy and growth containing details about the performance of various economic sectors and data on employment, GDP growth, inflation, and budget deficit.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will table the pre-budget document today in the Parliament ahead of the full budget presentation on Tuesday at 11 am for 2024-25.

Opposition row in the budget session

The United Opposition led by Congress INDIA is set to corner the NDA-led ruling government on the issues of the following:

  • NEET paper leak case,
  • Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments’ orders to eateries,
  • irregularities in the exams conducted by the Union Public Service Commission,
  • alleged misuse of probe agencies,
  • the appointment of Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker among others.

All Party Meet

In the all-party meeting before the budget session, the parliamentary affairs minister Rijiju stressed the importance of smooth functioning in parliament he called for cooperation from all the parties, while the government conveyed its willingness to discuss all issues following the rules.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who chaired the all-party meeting spoke against disruptions in Parliament and said its sanctity must be maintained.

Union Government lists five Bills for Budget session

The Union Government led by NDA is expected to table the five bill in the budget session excluding the Finance Bill, 2024.

  •  Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill, 2024 : Seeks to bring clarity and convergence in the roles of different organisations working on disaster management.
  • The Bhartiya Vayuyan Vidheyak, 2024: will replace the Aircraft Act, 1934, to address ambiguities and redundancies, to provide enabling provisions for manufacturing and ease of doing business, to give effect to provisions of international conventions, and to implement international standards.
  • The Coffee (Promotion and Development) Bill, 2024: This bill seeks to promote and develop the country’s coffee industry and to modernise the functioning of the Coffee Board.
  • The Rubber (Promotion and Development) Bill, 2024: This bill seeks to develop the Indian rubber industry and to modernise the functioning of the Rubber Board
  • The Boilers Bill, 2024: This bill is to repeals and re-enacts pre-Independence era Acts related to boilers

This are the five bill the NDA-led Government set to table in the Budget session of the Parliament.
