WhatsApp has recently introduced a new feature that simplifies managing contacts across WhatsApp Web and other linked devices. Previously, users were required to save contacts on their primary device before they could appear on linked devices. With this update, users now have the flexibility to save contacts directly from their connected devices.

WhatsApp saves contacts on the web and other linked device

WhatsApp is introducing a new feature allowing users to save contacts directly from any device. This feature will initially be available on WhatsApp Web and Windows and will later expand to other linked devices.

Furthermore, WhatsApp has also announced a feature that enables users to save contacts exclusively on WhatsApp, separating personal and professional contacts or sharing the phone with others. Users will be presented with the option to save a particular contact only on WhatsApp or sync it to their smartphone as well.

This feature utilizes a novel encrypted storage system called Identity Proof Linked Storage (IPLS), which leverages key transparency and WhatsApp’s hardware security module (HSM) technologies.

According to WhatsApp, contact information is stored using a strong encryption key generated on the client’s device. This information is retrieved only when the client authenticates the primary device identity. Contacts saved on WhatsApp will be restored if the user ever loses their phone or changes devices.

Additionally, users can also create or customize contact lists if they have separate personal and work WhatsApp accounts on the same device. These updates will also make it possible to eventually manage and save contacts by usernames. WhatsApp claims that this will boost privacy as you don’t need to share your number to message someone.
