Recent reports suggest that WhatsApp is developing a new translation feature that might utilize Google Live translation technology. But a new report by the feature tracker WABetaInfo suggests that WhatsApp might use its own in house technology for its live translation feature instead of reliaing on others tech to support it.

How the Feature Might Work (Based on Reports)

As you see in the screenshot above shared by the feature tracker. This give us insight about how this feature actually work. This screenshot was found on WhatsApp beta version 2.24.15.12.

  • Users will be able to enable a toggle to automatically translate all messages in a chat.
  • They will then choose the language they want to translate from and the language they want to translate to.
  • WhatsApp will likely prompt users to download a language pack for the chosen languages. This will allow for on-device translation, improving privacy and potentially reducing reliance on internet connectivity.
  • Once downloaded, all messages in the chat will be translated and labelled with the word “translated” at the bottom of the bubble.
