WhatsApp is working on a feature that allows users to mention contacts in status updates similar to the features that are available on Instagram. The Status update mentions feature is said to be private, so only the uploader and the users mentioned will be able to see it.

The new contact mentioned a feature in Status updates that WABetaInfo, a reputable WhatsApp feature tracker, discovered. It was spots on the WhatsApp for Andriod beta version 2.24.20.3 update. It is currently not available for users who sign up for the Google Beta Programme.

The image shared by WABetaInfo of the new status update mentions the feature on WhatsApp. The image shows a new “mentions” feature in a messaging app, allowing users to tag saved contacts in their status updates. Represented by an ‘@’ icon in the text field, the feature is still limited, as users can’t tag non-contacts yet.

When a user tags someone in a status update, the tagged person receives a notification and a message, and they can view and reshare the status. The tagged person’s name appears below the status, but only the user and the mentioned individual can see it, ensuring privacy.
