WhatsApp is testing a new feature on Android called the “Search on Web” image lookup, which allows users to search for images on the web. This feature could help users identify manipulated or misleading media within chats. Currently, the feature is only available to beta testers on Android, but it is expected to be rolled out to all users in the future.

WhatsApp ‘Search on Web’ Features

The feature was spotted in the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.23.13, as reported by the reputable feature tracker WABetaInfo. In the image below shared by the tracker, we can see that the feature will be available when you open the media view of an image, click on the three dots, and then tap Search on the web.

This new feature performs a reverse image search after asking for user confirmation to upload the image.

The feature is powered by Google’s reverse image search function, and it is up to the user to decide whether to use it. However, the company states that it does not have access to images before, during, or after they are sent to Google for processing.
